Agent Commerce Is Real: What Stripe’s ACP Means for Your Business
Stripe has already shipped the payment infrastructure for AI agents to transact on behalf of humans. Most businesses have no idea this exists. Here’s what it means and what to do about it.
In early 2025, Stripe quietly shipped something that most businesses haven’t noticed yet: the payment infrastructure for AI agents to transact on behalf of humans. It’s called the Agent Commerce Protocol, or ACP. It’s real, it’s in production, and it marks a fundamental shift in how commercial transactions happen online.
What ACP Actually Is
The Agent Commerce Protocol is a set of APIs and authentication standards that allow AI agents to make purchases, book services, and complete transactions on behalf of a user — without the user having to visit a website, click a button, or enter a payment method. The agent receives delegated spending authority, executes the task, and provides a receipt. The entire commercial interaction happens machine-to-machine.
Why This Changes Everything About Discovery
When an AI agent is making a purchasing decision on behalf of a user, the factors that influence that decision are completely different from the ones that influence a human browsing a website. The agent isn’t swayed by beautiful design, a compelling hero image, or a well-placed testimonial. It’s parsing structured data, pricing signals, availability information, and the credibility signals that are embedded in your content and schema markup. If your business isn’t machine-readable, you don’t exist to that agent.
What to Do Right Now
Three things that matter immediately. First, make your pricing and offering information structured and machine-readable — not buried in PDFs or locked behind a contact form. Second, implement schema markup that describes your business, your services, and your credibility signals. Third, publish a llms.txt file at your domain root that explicitly tells AI agents what your site is about, who it serves, and what actions are possible. These aren’t future investments. ACP is live today and the businesses that show up in agent-mediated transactions will be the ones that built the infrastructure to be found.
